Exploring West Dorset with kids is one of my favourite things to do. We’re lucky to live in a place where countryside, coastline, and charming villages are all within easy reach and nothing beats a family walk that ends in an ice cream.
Over the years, we’ve tried dozens of trails with our three children, and these five always stand out.
Whether you’re local or planning a holiday in Dorset, here are our top family-friendly walks that little legs will love, and grown-ups too.
1. West Bay to Eype Beach
- Distance: Approx. 1.5 miles each way
- Time: 1 hour (slow toddler pace!)
- Treat Stop: Baboo Gelato or West Bay kiosks
This walk is a classic for a reason, dramatic cliffs, sea views, and a mixture of pebbly beach and coast path. It’s not buggy-friendly all the way, but manageable for confident walkers. We usually park at West Bay, grab a coffee, and head west along the cliffs to Eype for a picnic and a paddle.

2. Burton Bradstock & Hive Beach
- Distance: Flexible – circular or beach-only
- Time: 30 mins to 1.5 hours
- Treat Stop: Hive Beach Café or The Parlour (in summer)
A flat, scenic option that’s great for younger kids. The beach is huge and the café has brilliant cakes, ice cream and views. Sometimes we just walk along the beach and back, or head slightly inland to make it circular.
Check in at the National Trust car park if it’s in the school holidays as they often have trails for children.

3. Langdon Hill (near Golden Cap)
- Distance: 1.5-mile loop
- Time: 45 minutes
- Treat Stop: Morcombelake post office (great little shop!)
A peaceful woodland loop with just enough climb to feel like an adventure. From the car park at Langdon Hill you can join the South West coast path to Golden Cap, the highest point on England’s south coast. The views of Golden Cap are stunning, even on a cloudy day and there’s parking right by the start (the car park is National Trust, so if you are a member it’s free, if not it is £1.50 for up to 1 hour, £3.00 for up to 2 hours, £4.50 for up to 3 hours and £6 all day) Bring snacks for a sit-down at the top!

4. Thorncombe Beacon
- Distance: 1 mile from Seatown (steep climb!)
- Time: 40 mins up, 20 mins down
- Treat Stop: The Anchor Inn or ice cream van in season
Short but steep, this one’s ideal for kids who love a challenge. The reward is 360° views across the Jurassic Coast. We always pack water and a snack for the top, then treat ourselves at The Anchor afterward.
5. Bridport to West Bay via the Old Railway Line
- Distance: 1.5 miles each way
- Time: 1 hour each way
- Treat Stop: Watch House Café, kiosks, or Baboo Gelato again (can you tell we’re fans?)
Flat, buggy-friendly, and great for scooters or balance bikes. It’s not the most scenic until you get closer to the coast, but it’s easy and safe. You can also take a pit stop at West Bay park, you can find this next to the long stay car park. It’s a favourite of ours) and lots for all ages. This is a lovely route for a weekend amble, bike or scooter ride and a favourite, especially our train mad son who loves seeing the train Platform Restaurant at the end of the route.

Tips for Walking with Kids in Dorset
- Always pack snacks (obviously)
- Bring a carrier or sling if you’ve got a little one, some routes aren’t buggy-friendly
- Spare socks, clothes and a towel are always useful!
- Check tide times if you’re heading near the water!
Over to you…
Have you walked any of these with your family? I’d love to hear your favourites, or if you’ve got any hidden gems we should try next!
