Review: A Special Evening at Lainston House and The Avenue Restaurant

AD (press visit) Lainston House, nestled in the Hampshire countryside, offers an unforgettable blend of luxury, charm, and culinary excellence. Our December visit was to experience the relaunch of The Avenue restaurant, with Tom Hamblet as head chef. It was one we’ll never forget, from the warm welcome to a truly outstanding meal.

The Hotel: Timeless Luxury in a Countryside Setting

We stayed overnight at Lainston House and it truly exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, the hotel impressed with its grand yet welcoming atmosphere. Set within beautiful Hampshire countryside, the historic property is full of character, from the sweeping driveway to the manicured grounds and elegant interiors.

Our room was the most gorgeous blend of heritage and comfort, with thoughtful touches throughout. Soft lighting, plush furnishings, and a calming colour palette made it the perfect space to unwind after dinner. It felt like a real treat from start to finish, ideal for a romantic getaway, a special occasion, or simply a luxurious countryside escape.

The Restaurant: The Avenue with Tom Hamblet

The Avenue has relaunched under the direction of the incredibly talented Tom Hamblet, and it’s quickly become a dining destination. The attention to detail in both service and presentation was outstanding and the passion from every member of the team was evident throughout the evening.

Our meal started with an array of small snacks, including the most delicate laminated brioche served with a garden herb butter that quite literally melted in the mouth.

For starters, we both chose the scallops with anchovy, seaweed pickle, and ajo blanco. A beautifully balanced dish with bold, fresh flavours.

The main event was the venison loin cooked to perfection, rich with complementary flavours, and immaculately presented. Every bite was a reminder of how skilled the kitchen team truly is.

Dessert didn’t disappoint either. We sampled the whipped cheesecake tart and a decadent coffee and chocolate mousse, both memorable finishes to a standout meal.

A Dining Experience Worth Travelling For

What made this meal exceptional wasn’t just the food itself, but the atmosphere, care, and storytelling behind each dish. It felt special from the first welcome to the final bite. This wasn’t just dinner, it was an experience, made even more meaningful by the team’s passion and Tom Hamblet’s creative, flavour-forward approach to cooking.

If you’re looking for somewhere truly memorable for a celebration or simply an unforgettable evening, Lainston House and The Avenue offer something really special. We can’t wait to return.
