Dorset Sunflower Trail at Maiden Castle Farm: A Bloom-Filled Day Out in Dorchester

Looking for one of the best things to do in Dorset this August? We visited the Dorset Sunflower Trail at Maiden Castle Farm on its 2025 opening day, and it was every bit as beautiful as we remembered. Set in the stunning countryside just outside Dorchester, this seasonal experience is a must-visit for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking for a beautiful day out surrounded by vibrant sunflower fields.

Run by the lovely Hoskin family, Maiden Castle Farm invites visitors each year to celebrate the beauty of the Dorset countryside, and this year’s display is bursting with colour, joy, and over 300,000 sunflower seeds, including vibrant new varieties in yellow, orange, red and purple. Because the seeds are mixed, you never know what you’ll see around the next corner.

Whether you’re local or visiting from afar, this is easily one of the most joyful things to do in Dorchester. We wandered through the two trails, the shorter one (around 10 minutes and perfect for prams and pushchairs) and the longer one (a 30-minute wander through the blooms). Both are beautiful, and you’re welcome to do either or both at your own pace.

If you’re into sunset vibes, don’t miss the Sundowner Sessions every Thursday evening (weather permitting) for golden hour strolls, details will be announced on their social media soon.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning your visit:

Plan Your Visit

  • Dates: 1st to 17th August 2025 (may be extended to the 25th)
  • Opening Times: 11am–4pm daily
  • Tickets: Only £5 per person (under 5s go free!)
  • Booking: Not essential, but recommended during busy times
  • Parking: Free, on-site, just pop ‘Dorset Sunflower Trail’ into your sat nav. It’s in a field, but easy to navigate! There are also signs all along the route from the A35 so it’s easy to find!
  • Dogs: Not allowed (the sunflowers will be harvested for oil later)
  • Accessibility:
    • Short trail (~10 mins): ideal for wheelchairs & prams (weather permitting)
    • Long trail (~30 mins): great for a proper leg-stretch

A Day Out That Gives Back

This isn’t just a beautiful place to visit, it’s all for a good cause. A large portion of ticket sales go directly to the Dorset County Hospital Emergency and Critical Care Unit. In 2024, visitors helped raise an incredible £16,300, and the farm hopes to beat that this year. So your £5 not only buys a lovely day out, it helps support vital care in the community too.

From colourful petals to countryside views, this is what summer in Dorset is all about. The Dorset Sunflower Trail is one of our favourite hidden gems, and we already can’t wait to come back.
