If you’re looking for the perfect family activity in Dorset, fossil hunting in Charmouth is a must. Set along the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this small seaside village is famous for its rich fossil beds, stunning coastal walks, and family-friendly charm.

We’re lucky to live nearby and love spending time on Charmouth Beach, especially in the winter months. Pick a sunny day and it’s beautiful.

Why Charmouth Is the Best Place for Fossil Hunting in Dorset
Charmouth Beach is one of the most accessible spots along the Jurassic Coast for fossil hunting. Charmouth offers gently sloping beaches and plenty of space to explore, ideal for families with kids.

The best time to go fossil hunting is at low tide, when new fossils are exposed by the sea. It’s also important to stay away from the cliffs, which can be unstable due to erosion (this is the same advice along the whole coastline).
Visit the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre
Before heading onto the beach, we always pop into the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, located right on the seafront. It’s completely free to enter and packed with displays of locally found fossils, our 10 year old loves visiting here. From ammonites to ichthyosaurs, it’s a brilliant way to get kids excited before they start their own search.

There are lots of hands-on activities too, including microscopes, fossil rubbings, and interactive displays.
They also offer guided fossil walks, which are perfect for beginners or families who want to maximise their chances of finding something special. Check their website for timings. You can book online or in the centre and there’s a lovely little gift shop for pocket-money souvenirs.
