There’s nothing better than a beach day on the Dorset coast, whether we’re fossil hunting in Charmouth, paddling at Hive Beach, or chasing the tide at Lyme Regis. But as any parent knows, beach days with kids require a bit more than just sun cream and flip-flops.

Need inspiration for your Dorset trip? Start with our easy-to-use Trip Planner.

Here’s our tried-and-tested family packing list, with a few game-changing products that make our trips easier, more fun and less sandy (well… sort of).

A Good UV Beach Tent

Perfect for keeping little ones shaded and safe when the sun’s out. We love tents that pop up easily and have mesh windows for airflow. Top tip: they also protect you from seagulls when you want to have your lunch!

Top-rated picks:

Kids’ Swimwear & Wetsuits

Wetsuits are a must for Dorset beaches, even in summer, especially for kids who love staying in the sea for hours. We love the Mountain warehouse ones! Don’t forget a life jacket if you’re planning any paddleboarding adventures — it’s recommended to use one rated 50N or higher.

Top-rated picks:

Beach Wagon or Trolley

If you’ve ever tried to carry 6 bags, 3 towels and a toddler across shingle, you’ll understand why this changed our life. We use this for festivals and getting everything to the beach!

Top-rated picks:

Sand-Free & Dry Quick Towels

We were sceptical too, but these do genuinely shake off sand better than regular towels and dry fast. We use the Dock & Bay towels for Eurocamp holidays too and they are so handy as they dry really quiickly over night for the next day. I would also recommend their poncho’s to dry off kids quickly and get them out of wet costumes.

Top-rated picks:

Reusable Water Bottles

Save money and reduce plastic by packing cold drinks in insulated bottles that last all day.

Top-rated picks:

Something to relax on!

If you’re at a beach without a hire service for deck chairs or just want to save the pennies, try and foldable beach chair.

Top-rated picks:

Picnic or Cool Bag

A cool bag is a must, even if it is just a way to organise the snacks and lunch from the costumes!

Top-rated picks:

A dry robe or similar

We all have these now, mine was bought 4 years ago and has lasted really well.

Dry Robe

Final tips:

  • Don’t forget a change of clothes, baby wipes, and a bag for wet things
  • Keep a stash of snacks handy
  • A small hand broom is great for brushing sand off feet before getting in the car
  • Don’t forget rash vests and hats!
