ad If you’ve looked into places to stay in West Dorset recently, you’ve probably heard people talking about Outbuildings.

Originally known for its beautifully designed boutique farm stay just outside Bridport, Outbuildings has recently opened its restaurant, The Cart Shed, to non-residents for both lunch and dinner, making it one of Dorset’s newest foodie destinations. Tables do need to be booked in advance, but trust me, it’s worth planning ahead.
We were invited along to experience dinner, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like one of those places you instantly want to return to.
First impressions
Set on a working farm just a few minutes outside Bridport, Outbuildings blends restored farm buildings with contemporary design to create a space that feels luxurious, but relaxed.
Everything has been thoughtfully considered. Exposed brickwork, reclaimed timber, beautiful planting and soft lighting create a relaxed atmosphere that’s equally suited to a special celebration or simply escaping for a date night.

One thing that really stood out to me was the furniture. We were told many of the tables and chairs have either been made on site or crafted locally, and it perfectly reflects their ethos of supporting local makers and celebrating Dorset craftsmanship.
The Cart Shed
The restaurant itself is called The Cart Shed, and it’s now open for lunch and dinner as well as serving hotel guests. Lunch offers a more relaxed menu, while dinner centres around a seasonal Chef’s Selection menu inspired by local Dorset produce. Booking ahead is essential, particularly if you’re not staying overnight, as they don’t accept walk-ins.
The whole concept is built around what they describe as a “Just Down The Road” philosophy, sourcing ingredients from trusted local suppliers and changing the menu with the seasons rather than sticking to the same dishes year-round.
Starting the evening
Our evening began with a glass of Furleigh Estate English sparkling wine, produced just a few miles away in Dorset.

It was the perfect way to start, served alongside a selection of delicious snacks while we settled into the evening.
As the sun started to set across the courtyard, the atmosphere became even more magical.
The food
One of my favourite things about the evening was that every dish felt carefully thought through without ever feeling overly complicated.
Some of the dishes we enjoyed included:
- Stone bass with cockle and red pepper sauce, kohlrabi tartlet, cucumber yoghurt and potato crisp.
- Crispy ham hock with pineapple ketchup, charred pineapple, gribiche and leaves.
- Salt-aged beef sirloin with chimichurri and peppers.
- Tenderstem broccoli with Caesar dressing and plenty of parmesan.

Every plate was beautifully presented, but more importantly, everything tasted incredible.
The standout for me was the beef. Cooked perfectly and paired with fresh chimichurri, it was simple, seasonal and absolutely packed with flavour.
The service deserves a mention too. The team knew the menu inside out and happily talked us through each course, making recommendations along the way. At times it felt like they knew exactly what we’d enjoy before we did!
If you haven’t visited Outbuildings before, it’s worth knowing that it’s much more than somewhere to eat.

The adults-focused farm hotel has just ten individually designed rooms alongside experiences including outdoor hot tubs, a private cinema, handcrafted cocktails and beautiful spaces to unwind, all designed around helping guests slow down and reconnect.
Even if you’re only visiting for dinner, you get a real sense of the care and attention that’s gone into creating the whole experience.
Is it worth visiting?
Absolutely.
As someone who lives locally, I love discovering places like this that feel a little hidden away.
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, planning a date night or simply looking for somewhere special to enjoy fantastic food, The Cart Shed delivers.
The combination of beautiful surroundings, genuinely warm service and a menu built around Dorset’s incredible produce makes it one of the most memorable meals we’ve had recently.
We’ll definitely be back, next time I think we’ll be booking lunch so we can enjoy even more time soaking up the atmosphere.
